Printer Map / Mapper’s Print / Printer’s Map / Mapping Printing
Foldable interactive pocket map visualizing printers on Vassar’s campus.
Collage, relief printing / GIS, Illustrator, InDesign | Spring 2023
10 x 8 in. (unfolded)
︎
I made this map in my final semester at Vassar, as part of an independent study exploring printmaking and community. All copies were printed using one of the many laser printers located across campus.
I presented copies of the pocket map alongside a larger-scale (and not take-home-able) master map of campus printers & printing machines.*
While making and sharing these maps, I had in mind the following themes:

While making and sharing these maps, I had in mind the following themes:
- Printing vs. printmaking
-
Campus printers as a network and community resource (printing/printmaking tool accessible to all students, faculty, and staff)
- Data and digital vs. analog modes of representation/collection
- Distribution, invitation, ownership
- Scale, legibility
*Transcript of labels on master map of campus printers & printing machines:
[TOP LEFT] Printing this map entailed...
- 6 emails - conceptualizing, sharing files
- 8 emails (separate chain) - learning that this map could not be printed on campus in full or half size (given desired turnaround, likely not off campus either)
- 1 phone call - and a voicemail
- Several map + file adjustments
- 3 rounds of test printing - to check legibility (resolution, contrast)
- Trimming + joining 16 tiles

A map/print/inventory/record/attempt at consolidating information—where printing happens (or can happen) here, what this otherwise unarticulated system looks like, what patterns become visible (if any) when information about it is conveyed in this way
